 Earth Day

Last Friday, we celebrated Earth Day! We started with a prayer service led by the third grade and then went outside for a colorful scavenger hunt on the field. Look at what we found!

Kindergarten Read to Us!

Some of our friends in Kindergarten came over to read to the Pre-K class. They are working hard to become excellent readers and it shows! The Kindergartners read the story, while Mrs. DeBardino showed us the pictures. The Pre-K students can't believe they will all be reading next year, just like their Kindergarten friends.

Mail Unit Update

We received lots of mail this week and are now up to 17 diffferent states and 8 different countries! WOW! We love putting a pin in each place we receive mail from. Tell all your friends and family to keep all that mail coming!

We were all excited to receive this Koinobori banner
for Children's Day! Thanks to Johnny's mom's friend
for sending it to us!

Caterpillars to Butterflies!

Have you heard that we have caterpillars? Each class in EC has two jars of baby caterpillars in their classrooms. Each day, we are observing them - eating, sleeping, making webs (yes, caterpillars make webs), and shedding their skin. Next they will make their chrysalises and finally turn into butterflies. Stay tuned!

Important Reminders:

  • In preparation for Mother's Day, each student will be able to invite one guest (his/her mother or special friend) to a special May Crowning & Celebration of Mothers Prayer Service on Friday, May 6th at 8:15 AM in the school gym. Find more information in the Happenings. If you are interested in attending this special celebration, please sign up here. We would love it if each child had someone in attendance.
  • Show and tell will be on Wednesday, May 4. The topic will be something that begins with /d/.
  • Save the date for our end of year Early Childhood Celebration on Wednesday, May 25! Parents are invited to join us for this special event. More information will follow!

 Mail Unit

We officially kicked off our mail unit this week and the Pre-K students are so excited! First, we learned how to mail a letter, how the Post Office works, and what a mail carrier does. Then, the students were introduced to our new, mail-themed lessons on the shelves.

Basil is delivering the packages to the
correct houses using their address while
identifying numbers into the thousands.

Gavin is matching mail trucks and mail bags
using capital and lowercase letters.

Derek is sorting by colors and arranging
packages from smallest to largest.

Kalea is matching patterns and stamps
on envelopes.

Dmitri is finishing the stamp patterns.

Johnny is counting the room by counting
envelopes on the mail truck.

Vienna is counting stars on envelopes
and matching them to the correct
numeral from 11-20.

Hali is counting stars on envelopes
and matching them to the correct
numeral from 1-10.

Connor loved learning about what a
mail carrier does.

Carina is coloring her picture of a
mail carrier.

Amelia is reading the words on the
envelopes and matching them to the
correct pictures.

The most exciting part of our day is when the mail arrives! We have our very own mailbox in the classroom. When the flag is up, we know the mail is here!

AJ and Teigen are excited to see who
the mail is from today!

So far, we have received mail from 12 different states and 3 different countries. AMAZING! The boys and girls LOVE this unit and look forward to checking the mail everyday.

A huge thank you to Mahalia's Aunt Jamey who sent us a letter
from Indiana along with money to buy a special treat for the class.
Hali chose soft pretzels and we enjoyed them together today!

 Happy Easter!

The Pre-K students worked hard on their Easter Bunny directed drawings this week.

Look at their finished products!

Mail Unit

Next week, we will begin a unit on the mail.  We will learn all about the postal service and have already prepped some "mail" themed lessons for the shelves. We are asking for families and friends to write letters or postcards to the students and mail them to us at school.  We would like the letters to be a surprise for the children, if possible.   We will read the letters to the students and then plot where the letter came from on our world map and/or USA map.  We would love to receive mail from many different places so please feel free to reach out to family and friends from near and far for help! This will be a great opportunity for the children to learn about how the mail works and practice our geography skills.  When sending mail to the school, please include your child's name and use the following address:

Mrs. Barrera's Pre-K Class
475 Shadeland Avenue
Drexel Hill, PA 19026

At the end of the unit, I will send home any letter your child receives in his/her folder. Thanks in advance for your help with this project! We can't wait to introduce the mail unit to the boys and girls next week!

Important Reminders:

  • There is no school on Friday, April 15, and Monday, April 18, for Easter break. Classes resume on Tuesday, April 19.
  • Students will have free dress on Tuesday, April 19. Wear blue and bring $1.00 to support the Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support.
  • There will be no show and tell next week.
  • Hope you can join us for the HCA Spring Benefit and Silent Auction on Saturday, April 30. Please see the Happenings for more information.
