March 1-5, 2021

Read Across America Week!

This week, we celebrated Read Across America Week. We read and listened to a variety of stories, discussed the messages they shared, and even voted for our favorites.

The Pre-K students learned about authors and illustrators. They know that, in a story, the author writes the words and the illustrator draws the pictures. We learned about different kinds of stories: fiction, nonfiction, mystery, fairy tale, science fiction, comic, biography, poetry, and even ghost stories! We also learned about the process that authors and illustrators use to write their books.

Next, I told the children that they were going to be illustrators and authors! They were a little hesitant, yet intrigued at the same time. They couldn't fathom how they could do it on their own. So we began with coming up with an idea for their illustrations. We discussed a variety of topics and brainstormed some great ideas. The children were excited and got to work on their creations using crayons, markers, and even some construction paper to add to their collages.

Then, we worked on becoming authors! I worked with each child one-on-one to describe to me what they drew. We talked about how I would write the actual words, but they would have to tell me everything to say and the ideas were all theirs. Their imaginations ran wild and they were eager to share about their illustrations. I wish I could have captured their excitement. Check out their AMAZING stories!

Next week, we plan to share our stories with our classmates and our friends in Nursery 3! The boys and girls are so excited to be authors and illustrators and are already asking when we can do it again. I am so proud of them!
