 Founder's Day

On Wednesday, we celebrated our Founder's Day - the day Cornelia Connelly founded the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and our legacy began! We started the day with a prayer service where all the classes were commissioned with their service partners for the year. Pre-K and Kindergarten are in charge of all our school drives and Jack represented our class at the commissioning.

Traditionally on Founder's Day, the older students partner with the younger students to remind us of Cornelia's spirit of joy, community, and shared learning. Our 5th grade buddies came to Pre-K to spend some time with us!

Pumpkin Unit

We continued learning about pumpkins with our Kindergarten friends this week. On Tuesday, we worked on some pumpkin math and used cubes to measure how tall our pumpkins were. Students worked together to build the cubes as tall as their pumpkins, count each cube using one-to-one correspondence, and determine the height. The average was 7 cubes tall!

We even incorporated our pumpkins into music! We had a special music class with Miss Nast and she taught us "Five Little Pumpkins!" Check out our amazing singing!

Making Connections!

We love when the students take what they are learning in school and incorporate it into their play!

Aline is matching and organizing colors

 Fire Prevention Week

Did you hear that the Pre-K became Junior Fire Marshals this week?

Trying to get Junior Fire Marshals to all look at the
camera while wearing fire helmets is no easy task!

Through a program sponsored by The Hartford and Discovery Education, the Pre-K students learned four key lessons about fire safety and prevention:
  • Matches and lighters are only for grown-ups. Always be careful near the stove or a candle.
  • Have a smoke alarm on every floor and in every bedroom. Be sure to test them once a month!
  • Create and practice escape plans. Have two different ways to get out and practice together with your family!
  • Decide on a meeting place outside your home.
We have practiced our fire drills in school and our Junior Fire Marshals are now ready to practice them with you at home!

Pumpkins

This month, we are partnering together with our friends in Kindergarten to learn about pumpkins! On Tuesday, Mrs. DeBardino read us a story about going to a pumpkin patch.

Then we partnered up and traveled to our very own pumpkin patch at HCA - the boys and girls were shocked they had never seen it before! 😉 Each child was able to pick their very own pumpkin!

Lining up to go!

Jack and Jack were buddies!

"Where did they come from?"

On Thursday, we read the story The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano, a story about a little pumpkin who is different from all the others in the patch because he’s square instead of round. At first, the other pumpkins tease Spookley for his shape, but when a storm hits the farm, Spookley’s unique shape helps save the day by blocking a hole in the fence and keeping the other pumpkins safe. In the end, everyone learns that being different makes you special - and that our differences make the world a better place!

The students then created their own unique pumpkins during a directed drawing activity. A directed drawing is a step-by-step art activity where a teacher guides children through the process of drawing a specific picture one step at a time. Directed drawings help children develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, listening, and focus, while also building confidence in their ability to create recognizable artwork. Our pumpkin patch is full of special pumpkins, just like Pre-K and Kindergarten are full of special students!

On Friday, we got to paint our pumpkins in art class!

Stay tuned for more pumpkin fun!

Happy 5th Birthday to Siobhan!

We celebrated with a Glo-Stick dance party and everyone had so much fun! Shiv's mom even stopped by to join us!
