We have baby chicks!
Our first baby chicks hatched Sunday night! The boys and girls were bursting with excitement when they arrived at school on Monday morning. Let's just say that keeping their attention on anything but the chicks was not easy! They loved observing them inside the incubator and giggled as they stepped on top of each other in such a cramped space.
Once the chicks were ready, it was time to move them to the brooder box. We showed each chick where the food and water were and dipped their heads into each. The chicks alternated between eating and drinking, running around the box, and snuggling together under the heat lamp.
The Pre-K'ers most favorite part of the week was getting to play with the chicks. We talked with the students about staying still and calm, how to gently pet the chicks, and how we needed to let the chicks come to us instead of us moving to them. We discussed feelings and some children were nervous while others were excited. The best part was that those who were nervous conquered their fears and decided to join the group - and they were so glad they did! We formed a big circle on the floor and brought the chicks to the center of the circle. Pure joy all around!
The chicks didn't make it around to everyone this time, but we will have plenty of opportunities to observe them before they go back to the farm. No matter if the chicks came right to them or not, everyone had a great time!
The boys and girls can't wait to share all they have learned next week at the EC Celebration!
